Wisconsin’s new logo

March 18th, 2009

wisconsin_logo

On Monday, at the state’s tourism conference in LaCrosse, Gov. Jim Doyle unveiled the new logo and slogan for Wisconsin: “Live like you mean it” which replaces “Life’s so good” which has been used in tourism ads since 2005. Doyle says that it’s the latest effort to follow last years launch of “Originality Rules” and is meant to reflect Wisconsinites who are the opposite of complainers. As quoted on JSOnline, the governor says: Wisconsinites are “fiercely proud, hardworking and loyal people” who also have fun with life. The logo was created by Milwaukee marketing firm Red Brown Kle, but is receiving a lot of heat over the new look. Many creative blogs, such as the Creative Cooler, think the logo is “horrendous” and point out the poor design and shared slogan between Bacardi and our existing alcoholic reputation we have with the rest of the country. Blogger Mike Brenner created his own version of the logo (instead of one person doing a cartwheel, three people are doing a keg stand) with the slogan “Drink like you mean it.” A Facebook petition has also been created called “People against Wisconsin’s new logo”. In the logo’s defense, the state’s brand manager, Sarah Klavas, called the negative reaction “just the nature of this business” and says “I feel confident that it is an expression that really captures what the brand strategy means for the state.” You’re free to make up your own mind…
